فصل اول

ارزش حکمت

۱گفتار حکیمانه سلیمان ـ پسر داود، پادشاه بنی اسرائیل. ۲این گفتار حکیمانه  به شما کمک می کند تا حکمت و نصیحت خوب را تشخیص بدهید و گفتار عاقلانه را بفهمید. ۳به شما یاد می دهد که چطور عاقلانه و با عدالت و انصاف و امانت زندگی کنید. ۴این گفتار حکیمانه به اشخاص بی تجربه حکمت می آموزد و جوانان را به افرادی لایق و کاردان تبدیل می کند. ۵‏-۶این گفتار حکیمانه، حتی حکمت دانشمندان را زیادتر کرده و افراد تحصیل کرده را راهنمایی می کند تا بتوانند معنی گفتار حکما و مسائل مشکل دانشمندان را درک نمایند.

نصیحت به جوانان

۷ترس خداوند، ابتدای حکمت است، اما مردم نادان ارزش حکمت و ادب را نمی دانند.

۸ای پسر من، نصیحت پدر خود را بشنو و تعلیمات مادرت را فراموش مکن. ۹تعلیمات آن ها مانند تاج عزت و جلال بر سر تو و گردنبند زیبایی و افتخار بر گردنت خواهند بود.

۱۰فرزندم، وقتی گناهکاران کوشش می کنند تو را فریب دهند، تسلیم نشو. ۱۱اگر بگویند: «بیا با هم متحد شویم تا یک نفر را بکشیم و کمین کنیم تا خون بی گناهان را بریزیم، ۱۲بیا تا مثل قبر آن ها را زنده زنده قورت کنیم و مانند مرگ بر سر آن ها نازل شویم، ۱۳هرگونه اموال گرانبها به دست می آوریم و خانه های خود را از اموال دزدی پُر می کنیم. ۱۴بیا باهم همدست شویم تا هرچه بدزدیم با هم تقسیم کنیم.»

۱۵فرزندم، با آن ها در یک راه مرو و از آن مردم دوری کن. ۱۶چونکه پای آن ها به خاطر شرارت می دود و برای ریختن خون شتاب می کند. ۱۷انداختن دام در مقابل چشمان یک پرنده کار بیهوده ای است. ۱۸اما این قبیل افراد، برای خود دام می نشانند، دامی که خودشان در آن هلاک خواهند شد. ۱۹دزدی، عاقبت باعث هلاکت دزد می شود. سرنوشت کسانی که با قتل و غارت زندگی می کنند، هلاکت و نابودی است.

ندای حکمت

۲۰حکمت در کوچه ها و در جاده ها با آواز بلند همه را صدا می زند. ۲۱در دروازۀ شهرها و هر جائی که مردم دور هم جمع می شوند، فریاد می کند:

۲۲«ای مردم نادان، تا کی می خواهید احمق باشید؟ تا به کی می خواهید از مسخره کردن دانش لذت ببرید؟ تا به کی مردم احمق از حکمت نفرت می کنند؟ ۲۳وقتی شما را صدا می کنم گوش بدهید. پندهای خوبی می دهم و آنچه می دانم به شما می آموزم. ۲۴چندین بار من شما را صدا کردم، نیامدید. دستهای خود را به طرف شما دراز کردم، پروا نکردید. ۲۵نصایح مرا نپذیرفتید و نخواستید که شما را اصلاح کنم. ۲۶پس، وقتی گرفتار شوید، به شما می خندم و هنگامی که دچار ترس و وحشت شوید، شما را مسخره می کنم. ۲۷وقتی ترس مثل طوفان به شما حمله کند و مصیبت مانند گردباد، دور شما را بگیرد، وقتی که به تنگدستی و پریشانی دچار شوید. ۲۸آن وقت مرا صدا خواهید کرد ولی جواب نخواهم داد. همه جا به دنبال من خواهید گشت، ولی مرا نخواهید یافت، ۲۹زیرا شما هرگز به حکمت توجه نکردید و از خداوند اطاعت ننمودید. ۳۰هیچ وقت با من مشورت نکردید و به نصیحت های من توجه ننمودید. ۳۱بنابراین، آنچه کاشته اید درو خواهید کرد و اعمال شما، شما را گرفتار می سازد. ۳۲مردم نادان که حکمت را قبول نمی کنند، نابود می شوند و بی توجهی آن ها، خود شان را هلاک خواهد کرد. ۳۳اما کسانی که به من گوش بدهند در آرامش زندگی خواهند کرد و از هیچ چیزی نخواهند ترسید.»
